Report in the Luzerner Zeitung by Julia Stephan dated 25.11.17

Text by Pirmin Bossart for the Willisauer Bote 14.11.17:

Found pieces from everyday life become art

The unspectacular is the particular: In the “bau 4” in Altbüron, Silas Kreienbühl shows photos and video works that realign our perception: Towards that, which every moment of art holds ready.

Silas Kreienbühl has arranged the photos along the walls in different formats. Some are placed on large wooden panels hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the room. This production alone is a simple and fitting installation in the space of “bau 4” used for concerts and exhibitions by the company “schaerholzbau” in Altbüron.

One strolls along the photographs and looks at things and incidents, which all of us encounter in everyday life: House facades, the steering wheel of a bicycle, a nighttime parking place for cars, scuffed garden chairs, fir branches against the light, the hood of a car, an iridescent puddle of rain at night, a cup of tea on a table, the reflection of windows.

A small video work shows people travelling in the subway as they have become the artist’s counterpart for a little while. We become aware how they look like at this point of time, move their heads, ponder over something, or take a look out of the window on the passing urban landscape. A third element of the exhibition is a series of stelae on which Kreienbühl has recombined various duplo-figures by placing them on a brightly colored subsurface.

Museum of the Future

The Neudorf-born artist has been working in Berlin for almost a year now. With the project “Museum of the Future” he devotes himself to different research ventures, some of which he has already concocted and pursued in the KKLB Beromünster. Together with Wetz and as director of the KKLB, Kreienbühl is in charge of the “Art in the Hospital” project, and established a KKLB branch in Berlin through his personal presence and engagement there.

His works, which express highly playful characteristics, aim at opening our eyes and senses to art in order to sharpen our perception. Kreienbühl is looking for art where some people wouldn’t expect it: In the shiny surface of a garbage bag, in the interplay of the shapes of a roof construction, in the arrangement of leaves and garbage accidentally blown into a corner of a house.

Unconventional and meaningful

Hildegard Schär quoted the artist who said “Can that which is simply available be meaningful?”, and she gave the answer herself by referring to the photographic works in the “bau 4”: “Yes, it’s meaningful”. Although Kreienbühl didn’t capture in his photos any “flagship places”, they surprise us with aesthetically unconventional features. “The gaze for the inconspicuous and everyday occurrences stimulates our views and inspires us to become aware of our environment, no matter where we are.”

This is entirely meeting the artist’s intentions. By declaring what he perceives as art, he claims at the same time that art has to do with life and its permanent changes. His Museum of the Future is everywhere. It doesn’t assemble art works that preferably must be preserved, however images and processes that may come into existence any time and vanish again.

“You can discover stories everywhere, which trigger something that has to do with yourself as these stories tell us how life works” says Kreienbühl. That’s what art is capable of doing. It’s based on the approach the KKLB director pursues with his art education: Non-elitist art. Art to which you can speak and be surprised by it. Kreienbühl also organises walks in Berlin, where participants can experience for themselves how much everyday life is presented by art at any time.

Jazz and improvisation from Berlin

Silas Kreienbühl’s exhibition in the “bau 4” is embedded in a fine concert programme that brings a group of musicians from Berlin to Altbüron. On 18 November “Die Hochstapler” will perform and on 25 November the Silke Eberhard Trio. A special project will take place at the finissage on 16 December: The Berlin duo ILOG will then play with the two bassists Jan Schlegel and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten.
