«Again and again I found that what I had wanted to show was not there in the photographs I took. My mind had predetermined the images too firmly: I could neither find their counterpart in the reality out there, nor was I fascinated by what I already knew. What I had actually wanted was to discover – to convince myself that there is much out there that is beautiful and intriguing, if only one could look properly. With nothing but the right attitude, unprejudiced and open.

A radical step was necessary. I turned to the part of the developed film strip that is normally cut off and thrown away. Something wonderful revealed itself: light that had leaked in by accident, and traces of the processing itself. Or chance exposures of the kind made after loading a new film, when you have to release the shutter a few times to advance it. Colours, markings, structures and geometric forms emerged. All I did was choose the crop – everything else was already there.»
