The Museum of the Future needs no building and no institution. It needs no collection and no exhibition programme. There are no restrictions or requirements of any kind. It can exist at any time and in any place.
The Museum of the Future can come into being within. This has to do with perception, attitude and valuation. Everything depends on the attention and significance one gives. According to these qualities, one becomes capable of establishing – in everything that already exists – the classifications, references and combinations that can bring forth the artworks of the future.
A Museum of the Future can come into being as soon as it is defined, in whatever way, by anyone at all. And it exists for as long as someone sustains it through their perception. This sustaining can, of course, also be passed on to someone else. The medium of photography, for example, lends itself very well to this.
*One of my museums was at Heinersdorferstrasse 47 in Berlin, Weissensee, on Friday 26 February 2016. It may still be there now. But it will certainly never again be exactly as it was. Then again, that no longer matters. It is always, anew, about something we do not yet know – in life just as in art.
